Part of the book series: Clinical Practice in Urology ((PRACTICE UROLOG))

Abstract

This chapter will deal with the radiology of malignant renal neoplasms in adult patients, with prime attention being paid to the more common types and their chief differential diagnostic considerations. The burgeoning technologies of diagnostic radiology have made possible the accumulation of many findings regarding renal neoplasm, which, when considered together, permit greater specificity in diagnosis. However, the approach to diagnosis is not to gather the most data possible, but rather to proceed with data accumulation in a planned, orderly way so as to reach a level of diagnostic confidence that will result in proper patient management. It is upon the basis of such a structure that this chapter has been devised. Going under the name of decision trees or algorithms, the method is simply the use of the available technologies in a sequence that depends not only on the initial clinical presentation that suggested the possibility of renal neoplasm but also the results of radiologic examinations already done, factoring in considerations concerning the costs of the technologies. Costs are not only financial but also the patient risks.
