Abstract

There are many causes of inflammatory bowel disease (Table 9.1). In Western industrialised countries inflammation is due mainly to ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, but these are rare in the tropics and Mediterranean countries where the majority of cases are due to infection such as amoebiasis or bacillary dysentery.
