Abstract

Diverticular disease is the commonest organic colonic condition encountered. It is rare below the age of 30 but increases in incidence thereafter with one-third of patients over the age of 60 having diverticula on barium enema examination. In patients under 50 it is commoner in males and this small group is more likely to have symptoms and to develop complications, with about 50% requiring surgery. In old people it is commoner in females and surgery is needed only rarely.
