Intravesical Chemotherapy for Superficial Bladder Cancer

  • Chapter
Chemotherapy and Urological Malignancy

Part of the book series: Clinical Practice in Urology ((PRACTICE UROLOG))

Abstract

One of the major challenges facing the urologist dealing with patients with superficial bladder cancer is the high likelihood that each patient will develop a subsequent tumor despite complete resection of an initial tumor(s). This incidence ranges from 40%–70% and is consistent among several reported series (Greene et al. 1973; Lerman et al. 1970; Pyrah et al. 1964; Williams et al. 1977). Prior to a review of the current status of intravesical therapy, it will be helpful to review the pathology of superficial bladder cancer, critical factors in endoscopic management, and the current concepts regarding the etiology of the high incidence of subsequent tumors.
