Abstract
The term “spinal dysraphism” was introduced by Lichtenstein (1940) to denote the occurrence and sequelae of defective fusion of the neural tube. Such dysraphism comprises a wide variety of abnormalities, varying in complexity and involving not only the structures derived from the ectodermal neural tube, but also tissues derived from entoderm and mesoderm. We prefer this overall term to spina bifida.
