The importance of early diagnosis was first propounded by Putti (1927, 1929). In 1937 Ortolani described a test to enable the diagnosis to be made at the time of birth. In 1962 von Rosen in Malmo and Barlow in Salford reported excellent results of treatment obtained following early diagnosis, with very few failures.
