Abstract
In Chapters 2 to 9 our results on the morphology of identified cutaneous afferent fibres and a variety of neurones in the dorsal horn have been described. In the individual chapters the relation of the morphology to the physiology has been discussed. In the present chapter this work, together with recently published results from other laboratories, will be brought together and an attempt made to place the data into perspective and to try to extract some guiding principles about the organization of the dorsal horn. In addition an appraisal will be made of the classification of dorsal horn neurones and the usefulness of the cytoarchitectonic scheme of Rexed.
