Isolation and Characterization of Placental Proteins with Special Reference to Pregnancy-Specific β1 Glycoprotein and Other Proteins Specific to the Placenta

Placental Proteins

Abstract

During the past 10 years in our laboratory a number of proteins have been isolated and characterized from human term placentae and this work is being continued. Some of the proteins already isolated can be used therapeutically; others have been found to be valuable in pregnancy and/or tumour diagnosis. The present paper reviews this work. The first part describes all the placental proteins so far detected or isolated; the second part deals with the isolation, characterization and clinical significance of those proteins which are specific to the placenta.
