The Measurement of Trophoblastic Proteins as a Test of Placental Function

  • Conference paper
Placental Proteins

Abstract

Ever since TATARINOV and MASYUKEVICH (1970), followed by BOHN (1971) and GALL and KALBERT (1972) adduced evidence that the trophoblast produces and secretes into maternal blood a number of proteins other than chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and human placental lactogen (hPL) two questions have been uppermost in the minds of investigators in this field. The first was whether the concentration of these proteins in the maternal circulation gave any indication of the functional state of the placenta and the second was what their physiological function might be.
