Trophoblast-Specific β1 Glycoprotein as an Indicator of Pregnancy and Neoplasia — A Review of Recent Clinical Studies

  • Conference paper
Placental Proteins

Abstract

The measurements of placental proteins and embryo-specific antigens as tests of placental function, as means of detecting pregnancy or as tumour markers are presently under intensive investigation. Thus α-fetoprotein serves as a specific marker for chemically induced mouse hepatomas (ABELEV et al., 1963) and for human hepatocellular carcinoma (TATARINOV, 1963). Carcinoembryonic antigen is used as an indicator of colonic adenocarcinoma (GOLD and FREEDMANN, 1965). These proteins are present in normal adult serum at levels from 2-40 ng/ml (EGAN et al., 1972; MCINTIRE et al., 1975; RUOSLAHTI and SEPPÄLÄ, 1971). On the other hand placental proteins cannot usually be detected in the sera of normal non-pregnant adults even by sensitive radioimmunoassay techniques. Thus placental proteins are specific indicators of the presence of either pregnancy or cancer.
