A Cellular Automata Model of the Expansion of the Assyrian Empire

Cellular Automata: Research Towards Industry

Abstract

A simple cellular automata model is used to simulate some aspects of the expansion of the Assyrian empire from the XIV to the VII century b.C. The model assumes that an “Assyrian cell” expands to neighboring cells based on five factors: (1) the physical and (2) political penetrability of cells, (3) the initial expansive force of the Assyrians, (4) the decay of local expansive force with increasing distance from the originary cell, (5) the increase in expansive force due to locally acquired resources. We discuss various methodological issues and the generality of the model.
