Abstract
All interactive SQL statements can be used from within programs (Assembler, C, COBOL, PL/I, etc.) and are called embedded SQL statements. There are also a number of embedded SQL statements which may only be used in programs. Embedded SQL statements are identified by EXEC SQL and are converted by the precompiler to CALL statements or definitions appropriate for the host language. Embedded SQL statements must conform to the general syntactical rules for the host language (e.g. Assembler statements are continued by setting a non-blank character in the continuation column). Embedded SQL statements in COBOL programs must be terminated with END-EXEC.
Language is the amber in which a thousand precious and subtle thoughts have been safely embedded and preserved.
