The advice that I give people is to make a backup. This isn’t an anti-virus precaution at all. It’s just that when I look at most people’s systems, they don’t have an adequate backup, and you are much more likely to lose data from a hardware failure, a software crash or from “user error” than from a virus. I have seen too many people lose too much data that is too important. So if you, or your users, have some spare energy, put it into making a good, reliable, restorable backup.
