Abstract
Bilateral vasectomy for contraceptive purposes is one of the most frequently performed minor operations. It has been estimated that 50 million men rely on vasectomy for contraception (WHO 1991). By 1990 8 million men had been sterilised using the Chinese no scalpel technique (see below). In the United Kingdom sterilisation is the method of contraception in 24% of marriages and of these approximately half are vasectomy (Office of Population Censuses and Surveys: Household Survey 1985, HMSO, London).
