Human Infertility

  • Chapter
Male Infertility

Abstract

This chapter gives general background information about human fertility which is relevant to the management of infertile couples and to research. Guidelines are given about appropriate investigations at the primary care level and about when to refer couples to a specialist centre. The development of new methods of assisted conception is making it theoretically possible to help more and more couples where there is a male problem. However, enthusiasm needs to be tempered by a knowledge of the spontaneous conception rate in order to make proper and economical use of limited resources. The final section of this chapter is a framework for considering ethical problems.
