Abstract
The University of Hertfordshire Observatory (UHO) was founded in 1970 to provide observing opportunities for astronomy students at what was then the Hatfield Polytechnic. The polytechnics were a new development in higher education in the United Kingdom, being intended to provide generally industrially biased degree courses, frequently of a “sandwich” nature. The inclusion of a pure science like astronomy was therefore unusual. In fact, among the fifty or so polytechnics only three included astronomy in their portfolios from the start.
