Abstract
The power of multimedia lies in the large number of ways in which information can be represented, allowing the user to choose the optimal way of presenting each piece of information. It is also possible to relate different information sources to each other. However, all these advantages also cause new problems: it is difficult to develop large multimedia applications in a structured and consistent way. Moreover, such applications are often developed by large teams. This requires a mechanism which supports the cooperative development of a multimedia document. The ISO standard SGML [IS086a] and the draft standard HyTime [IS092b] have been defined to solve these problems (partially).
