Abstract
A clearly observable characteristic of the IT industry is its gendered nature, it is perceived as a male world. It is well known that not many women prepare for work in IT nor do many achieve positions of influence within the industry. The numbers now working in the industry and their influence are not consistent with the number of women who have reached suitable intellectual levels in the wider society. Effort is being applied by both academic bodies and industry bodies to improve the numbers of women working in IT.
