Abstract

In Windows 98 a ‘window class’ provides a template that describes the general functionality supported by all windows of that class — before a window of a particular window class can be created the class must be registered with the operating system. The most important piece of information supplied by the registration process is the name of a window callback function — the function contains the message handlers for all windows created from the class. This chapter presents the programming details needed to create a window — the topics covered include:

  • registering and unregistering a window class

  • creating a window of a user-defined class

  • building a program message loop

  • implementing the callback function and message handlers
