Abstract
Gazing up on a brilliantly starlit night, from a site well away from lights and buildings, fills me with a feeling of serenity. I can also sense the vastness of space and the immense power sources responsible for the shining stars. Subjective though these emotions are, I know that countless people have had similar experiences right back through the ages to the dawn of mankind. It is little wonder that astronomy is the oldest science.
