Abstract
Object databases have been introduced since 1987. The first version of ODMG standard appeared in 1991, and the new release 2.0 is from 1997. During ten year period, object database technology has received considerable attention and improvements. Today products are mature and proved their efficiency in many real applications (telecommunication, energy distribution, spatial data management, Web, etc.) where gigabytes of data are manipulated. The goal of this paper is to present two key subjects: (i) why the ODMG standard is crucial, and (ii) how to implement an open architecture to connect object and relational databases.
