Abstract
Our attempt to provide a design framework for concurrent systems by extending familiar sequential programming languages was something of a failure. In their favour, extensions are understandable, and no more than common sense is required to use them; they simplify the design of modest concurrent systems to such a degree that even the inexperienced can get things right most of the time without the involvement of nasty things like discrete mathematics.
