Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment: Details of Examination

  • Chapter
Management of Vitreo-Retinal Disease

Abstract

Pre-operative examination enables:

  • Assessment of the need for any pre-surgical treatment.

  • Consideration of the differential diagnosis of RRD.

  • A decision to be made about the choice of surgical procedures and the need or not for prophylactic treatment.

  • Informed discussion with the patient (and/ or relatives).

The initial examination is that of the anterior segment and is conducted at the slit-lamp. This is followed by examination of the posterior segment by indirect ophthalmoscopy with scleral depression. This in turn is followed by a further visit to the slit-lamp for contact and non-contact lens examination.
