Developing Work and Quality Improvement Strategies
The driving forces to creation of good work have changed over different time periods. The unemployment rate seems particularly influential in this respect. For Sweden, but also for many other countries, it is no longer the ideals of socio-technology that push the development of good work. Among other aspects, internationalisation, increased competition and EU regulations have increased the pressure on organisational change and renewal in order to improve quality, productivity and efficiency of operations. This pressure is to an increasing extent transferred to sub-deliverers, i.e. small and medium sized companies. Quality strategies, such as Total Quality Management, are gradually gaining increased acceptance in many companies. Since such quality strategies contain certain humanistic aspects on the design of work, they are potential driving forces towards good work. However, other aspects and applications of quality strategies are not entirely positive, and can even introduce risks and negative aspects for the development of the workers and their work.
The aim of the workshop was to identify interactions between quality strategies such as TQM and developing work, and to identify potential improvements of strategies and methods used in this field, especially for small and medium sized companies. In addition it identified areas of mutual interest or contradiction between the approaches of TQM and or ergonomics (human factors).
