A number of different aspects of parallel programming could be considered as costs, but we will restrict our attention to cost as total execution time. This cost is a function of a program’s structure, properties of the target architecture that is used to execute the program, and the interactions between them. Many of the issues we will discuss apply equally well to other kinds of costs.
