Abstract
The role of sclerotherapy in the management of patients with varicose veins is currently determined by the country in which you live and the doctor you consult. There have been relatively few controlled trials, and our understanding of sclerotherapy techniques is based on craft rather than science. Three names are associated with three techniques, and although the underlying principles may be similar, the application is very different. The three techniques — the Fegan (the Irish school) [1,2], the Sigg (the Swiss school) [3] and the Tournay (the French school) [4] — form the basis of treatment. Every doctor employing sclerotheraphy will have devised his own methods and will claim exceptional results, but will have no scientific data or clinical trials to support his claim.
