Pain Relief in Chronic Pancreatitis

  • Chapter
Pancreatic Disease

Abstract

Pain is the cardinal symptom of chronic pancreatitis (1), and is, together with the usual accompanying alcoholism, the most difficult symptom to treat. For some patients with chronic pancreatitis pain is so severe that all their waking hours are devoted to pain control and the quality of life is low in every respect. As patients with chronic pancreatitis at the best can be symptom free, but never cured, the management of symptoms should be of prime concern in most pancreatitic patients. The pattern of pain changes with time, typically being recurrent and intermittent in the initial stages of the disease. Later it usually becomes persistent, but the characterstics of the pain may vary not only between patients but also in the same person from time to time (2).
