This chapter presents an overview of the specification language known as the Vienna Development Method or VDM. The mathematical framework underlying it, and the domain of its application, are identical to that of Z and, as a result, there are remarkable similarities between the two languages. Our aim is to exploit these similarities to gain some familiarity, and a degree of competence, in VDM. Thus, our overview essentially compares and contrasts of some common syntactic features of VDM and Z with identical, or closely related, meanings.
