Binary Image Processing and the Raster to Vector Transformation

Abstract

Document scanning and binarisation technologies are now quite well developed. As a result, many line drawing interpretation systems and projects take as their starting point a binary image of the original drawing. As outlined in figure 2.1, the interpretation of this image typically involves vectorisation, entity extraction, two- dimensional scene formation and, possibly, 3D reconstruction (depending upon drawing type). In this and the following two chapters we consider the steps involved in extracting a vector representation from the binary image. This process is known as the raster to vector transformation [46, 82–85].
