Abstract
This paper argues that integration into the manufacturing technology supply chain can be a valuable weapon in defending a company’s position in the product supply chain.
The paper approaches this argument by first examining how manufacturing supply chains in the west have restructured in recent years, and how through this restructuring some companies have become vulnerable. The paper then suggests that some of this vulnerability can be overcome by the company integrating into manufacturing technology source for a few choice technologies. Benefits of selective integration are then explored. Finally the paper presents a methodology that is intended to help a company decide the level of integration for these technologies.
