A Knowledge-Based System for the Selection of Cutting Tools and Data for High Speed Machining of Moulds / Dies

The paper details the development of a PC-based, knowledge-based system (KBS), for assisting users to select appropriate cutting tools and machinability data, for the high speed machining of moulds and dies. The system has been designed to incorporate fuzzy logic and genetic algorithm functions. Selection criteria used include workpiece specification (tool steel designation and hardness), machine tool specification (spindle taper, spindle speed and feed rate), nature of the operation (face milling and ball nose end milling) and type of cut (roughing and finishing). Outputs include recommended cutting tools and operating parameters.
