Tobacco use among police personnel in Indore, India

  • B. M. Shrivastava

Policemen, factory workers and public-transport workers are expected to work for long hours, often out of normal working hours, in bad weather and without proper rest intervals. Such workers often take up tobacco consumption under the widespread misconception that this habit helps them to discharge their duties with the necessary alertness. The study described here was designed to study why police personnel consume tobacco in various ways; we also studied whether their environment (urban, rural or tribal) affects the way they use tobacco or their awareness of its ill effects.
