Abstract
Varicose veins result from a failure of valves in the superficial venous system (long or short saphenous systems), and the condition is usually associated with incompetence (or reflux) in one of the main junctions between the superficial and deep systems, namely the sapheno-femoral junction or the sapheno-popliteal junction. Less commonly reflux is from incompetent perforators such as the mid-thigh perforator or others. Varicose veins may be “primary” due to damaged valves, or “secondary” due to deep venous incompetence.
