Biomechanical Performance of the Standard Orthofix External Fixator and Cortical Screws

  • Chapter

Abstract

At the time of its clinical introduction in the early 1980s, the standard Orthofix device was the first modern unilateral external fixator. It was developed for fixation of long-bone fractures and for distraction treatment of limb deformities. Biomechanically, the device was shown to provide fixation stability similar to the Hoffmann—Vidal quadrilateral frame which had been the standard fixation method for two or three decades. Since the original reports of De Bastiani and co-workers (1984, 1986), the Orthofix device has maintained its basic design, indicating the feasibility of its original engineering concepts. The widespread success of its clinical use has inspired and resulted in an increasing armentarium of different modifications of its design and new clinical applications. The original standard Orthofix device, however, remains as a land-mark of the treatment modality.
