Abstract

Monolateral fixators have been used in limb lengthening since the late 1970s. Wagner1 employed a technique for femoral lengthening which utilised a mid-diaphyseal osteotomy and a process of progressive lengthening at a rate of l–2mm per day. This was continued until the desired increase in limb length was achieved, after which the gap thus produced was filled with autogenous bone graft and the bone internally fixed with a plate.
