Abstract
Fractures in the proximal region of the tibia may involve the metaphyseal area alone, or both the metaphysis and the joint itself. Where there is very severe comminution of the articular surface, as in AO type C2 and particularly AO type C3 fractures, it is becoming common practice to bridge the joint with an external frame using the principle of ligamentotaxis to achieve gross reduction and to combine this with minimal internal synthesis to re-establish the joint surface.1,2
