Safety Corridors and Structures at Risk in External Fixation of the Upper Limb

Abstract

External fixation in upper limb trauma or orthopaedic surgery demands a specialized knowledge of the anatomical topography. Muscular function and biomechanics of the tendons and bones should be known in detail as well as the neurovascular routes from their origin along the upper arm and forearm to the hand. A minimally invasive technique for the implantation of fixator screws without an extensive surgical approach can only be performed if the surgeon is always aware of the underlying soft tissue structures. It is self evident that any operative technique should start with an anatomical review pointing out the anatomical structures which are at risk.
