Abstract
In recent years the concept of hybrid fixation, using combinations of unilateral fixation (cantilever loading) and ring fixation (beam loading) has been recognised as a most effective and biomechanically appropriate means of treating certain types of fractures and deformities. The Orthofix Hybrid Fixation System includes hybrid constructs where, in some instances, rings may be linked directly to a monolateral fixator(Fig. 10.1), while in others, wire-bearing rings are combined with rings bearing specially designed clamps for bone screws in a modular system (The Sheffield Hybrid Fixator, Fig. 10.2). For this reason, a working knowledge of the correct technique of wire insertion is integral to the correct application of these forms of external fixation.
