Abstract

Hysterectomy remains the most frequent surgical intervention carried out on women. Initially, the operation was performed for critical, life-threatening conditions. The increase in the number of indications has been paralleled by a spectacular decline in mortality and complication rates. The choice of hysterectomy as a therapeutic procedure will depend on the patient’s age, her wishes for pregnancy and desire to preserve her uterus. Conservative surgical treatment is possible in almost all cases. For most patients, removal of the uterus is more likely to be accepted if it is unavoidable or necessary because of failure of conservative forms of treatment.
