The Ovarian Endometrioma: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Surgery

  • Chapter

Abstract

The ovarian endometrioma represents a severe stage of endometriosis, which, by affecting women in their early reproductive life, can be a major threat to their fertility. It is frequently asymptomatic, but is also a cause of acute and chronic pelvic pain. When initially present on one side, it is likely to affect the other side later. The first surgical procedure is therefore critical for the preservation of the reproductive and endocrine functions of the ovary. In this chapter, we will discuss the pathophysiology, the diagnosis and the techniques of conservative reconstructive surgery.
