Abstract
Endometrial cancer is a very common malignancy; although it is sometimes considered to be relatively benign, the commonly reported 5-year survival remains only 75%. Endometrial cancer, like pelvic carcinomas in general, metastasise to regional (pelvic) lymph nodes. The internal iliac and low para-aortic (below the level of the inferior mesenteric artery) lymph nodes are the most frequently involved regions. As current imaging modalities are suboptimal in detecting these metastases, a significant percentage of patients with clinical stage I adenocarcinoma of the endometrium will be wrongly staged.
