Abstract
No attempt is made here to embrace the subject of knowledge-based systems in its entirety given the limited space available. In this part of the book we aim only to provide the reader with an overview of knowledge-based systems, what they are, how they fit in within the broader area of artificial intelligence, some of the terminology, architectures and applications. Looking at some of the outstanding problems and issues, particularly with respect to knowledge elicitation and knowledge representation. A description is included of a significant, sub-discipline of artificial intelligence in relation to image processing and knowledge-based systems namely neural networks. Exercises and references to further reading are provided in Appendix A.
