Abstract

Prior to serialization it was necessary to explicitly write each data element in an object. You then needed to reconstruct the data into objects when you read the file, which meant that you had to indicate that certain data were associated with certain objects and that certain objects were related. This was a very time-consuming and error-prone task. Also, unless you used existing file formats, it was unlikely that your data could be used by other applications.
