Abstract

One of the features which makes Java different from other languages is that you can write programs which can run within a browser on a Web page. HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is the language used to describe the content and layout of Web pages. HTML is excellent for displaying information with links to other Web pages, but if you want to create interactive applications which will run on the Web, Java is the most flexible and widely used way of doing this. Recently some alternative methods have become available, notably dynamic HTML and ActiveX, however Java is still the most powerful option available. Java programs which run within a browser environment are called applets.
