Abstract

Equatorial mounts have a “difficult spot” near the pole; altazimuths have it near the zenith. This ball-mounted reflector avoids both problems. Perhaps the best-known example of this type of mounting is the Edmunds Astroscan. Steven Lee has successfully extended this principle to a 12.5 in (315 mm) telescope, showing, on the way, how a typical ATM overcomes the problems that beset him.
