MATHCAD at the beginning of its development was a purely numerical system,i.e., it consisted of a collection of numerical methods (approximation methods) with a standardized user interface for the numerical (approximate) solution of mathematical problems using computers. The more recent versions (starting at version 3) added a licensed minimum variant of the symbolic processor of the computer algebra system MAPLE for exact (symbolic) calculations (formula manipulation).
