Abstract

A moment’s thought and it is obvious that eclipses have influenced science as a whole. No scientific development is more important to astronomers than photography, which has had such a profound influence in return on the type and accuracy of all scientific measurements. Only by making a digression into the history of photography can we begin to have an understanding of why the Sun, and particularly the Sun in eclipse, is so pivotal to so much of the science we take for granted.
