Abstract
John Charnley introduced metal on polyethylene (PE) articulation for total hip replacement in the early 1960s. His experience with polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) made him acutely conscious of the problem of wear, but he estimated that this would be a mean of 0.1 mm per year, and would not represent a problem.
