Titanium Femoral Component Fixation and Experience with a Cemented Titanium Prosthesis

  • Chapter
Interfaces in Total Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract

In 1791 the Reverend Gregor discovered a black magnetic sand with an unknown “elemental oxide” in Cornwall in the south-west of England. He suggested that this dement should be called “Menaccanite” as it had been found near the village of Menaccan. At the same time in Germany the chemist, Klaproth found a similar mineral and referring to the mythological children of Mother Earth named it “Titanium” after the “Titans” [1, 2].
