Abstract
The example of a ring familiar to all of us is the ring of integers. At an early stage we learn to count, as well as add numbers; once we get to school, we meet negative numbers which make subtraction possible in all cases. Later, when we come to study mathematics in earnest, we single out the laws satisfied by integers and consider other systems having two operations satisfying these laws. It turns out that such systems, calledringsoccur frequently and they form the subject of this volume.
